Feldman cancels Zimmerman fight
The
proposed celebrity boxing match involving controversial George
Zimmerman has been knocked out, Delco promoter Damon Feldman
confirmed late Saturday night.
“I am
going to cancel the fight,” the Broomall said, in a text message.
“Just too much controversy.”
Zimmerman
is notorious for having shot teenager Trayvon Martin while on a
Florida patrol as a town watchman. He was found not guilty of
second-degree murder in 2012, but remains a villain in the eyes of
many. Feldman was to have matched him in a three-round fight against
hip hop performer DMX, who was quoted as saying he would break every
rule in boxing in order to punish Zimmerman for shooting Martin.
Earlier
Saturday, Feldman insisted he was still considering promoting the
event, which would have been held in Los Angeles. But after deeper
consideration, he relented.
The fight
— which was to be a sports-entertainment blend — was heavily
criticized nationally.
Feldman
also canceled a press conference he had scheduled for Delaware County
Tuesday.
Had the
fight occurred, it would have been in Los Angeles, and available on
an internet broadcast, Feldman said.
