A NEW SET UP

The Phillies have classic starting pitching. The Phillies have a useful closer in Ryan Madson.

The Phillies have a playoff spot. The Phillies are about to have home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

The Phillies do not have a setup man. That much grew clear Thursday in Game 1 of a makeup doubleheader at Citizens Bank Park when Charlie Manuel came running to replace Antonio Bastardo with Brad Lidge with one out in an eighth inning about to get away from the Phils.

“He's having trouble with command,” Manuel said of Bastardo. “He's not really 'busting' the ball, turning it loose and throwing it through the mitt.”

As for command, Kendrick had plenty Thursday, taking a no-hitter into the fifth. And all of a sudden, he is being considered for some postseason setup duties, even though he has been a starter or a long reliever throughout his career.

"I could consider using him on right-hand hitters, definitely, late in the game if we have to use him,” Manuel said. "And I'm not saying that won't happen. I can see him doing that. He's tough on right-handers right now.”

Check out my column and the complete Phillies coverage on delcotimes.com and in the Daily Times Friday.
