Eklund of 'The Fighter' wins by TKO in Delco
Dicky Eklund won a TKO over Upper Darby's Joey O'Donnell in the main event of the celebrity boxing extravaganza Friday in Essington.
Eklund, 58, was a former contender who once knocked down Sugar Ray Leonard. He's the half-brother and former trainer of Micky Ward and he gained popularity in the film "The Fighter", in which he was played by Christian Bale. He is known as "The Pride of Lowell" Massachusetts.
According to promoter Damon Feldman, O'Donnell could not answer the bell for the third and final scheduled round.
Eklund will fight Michael Lohan in Lowell in November, Feldman said. Lohan, a veteran of the celebrity ring circuit, is the much-publicized father of entertainer Lindsay Lohan.
O'Donnell, 63, had a fruitful amateur career and competed strongly in the 1972 Olympics trials.
